What is pilateS

Pilates is a low-impact exercise regimen created by Joseph Pilates, originally (and aptly) named Contrology. In its original form, Pilates is a series of exercises meant to correct posture, faulty movement patterns, and even ailments. Pilates helps students gain strength, control of breath, concentration, precision of movement, balance, uniformity of muscles, and flexibility.  It is low-impact and can help many populations, including athletes seeking to balance their bodies and move more efficiently, prenatal or postnatal women embracing changes in their bodies, and rehabilitation of acute injuries or chronic pain.  Pilates also enhances your everyday life by increasing your range of motion, strength, and flexibility while reducing stress and eliminating poor movement patterns. In the words of Joseph Pilates, "You are only as young as your spine is flexible."

Prepare for your first session.

1. Start with an Intro Session. Are you new to Pilates or looking for a personalized approach? At Pilates Collective SLO, we believe that not all fitness programs should be treated equally. We offer introductory private lesson packages to help assess your movement and recommend the right program. Schedule a 30-minute intro session, and let us guide you toward a successful Pilates journey. Our paramount goal is to keep you safe and make you feel successful at every stage of your Pilates journey. We are invested in your success. Schedule a 30-minute intro session by clicking here.

2. Ditch your shoes. Ditch your shoes: Did you know that Pilates is traditionally performed barefoot? Exercising barefoot can help reveal any problematic movement patterns or muscle imbalances of the feet and ankles that may cause injuries. At PCS, we recommend grip socks for comfort, hygiene, and safety. Don't have them? Don't worry, they can be purchased at the studio.

3.  Be prepared to lie down.  Be prepared to lie down: Who doesn't like that? Many Pilates exercises are done supine (on your back), which can help decompress your joints and discover new ways to access all your muscles. Plus, the mat is an important tool for “feedback,” helping your brain create a better map of your body and how it moves. We offer a foam wedge for comfort if you're pregnant or cannot lie flat.

4. Pilates seems weird. We get it. Pilates can seem a little “weird” for the first few sessions. We're taking you through movements you've probably never done on apparatus you're not used to, and that's okay. It's very common not to “feel” many of the sensations we're describing right away because your brain is overloaded with a lot of new sensory information. But don't worry, once you learn the method and understand the patterns and concepts, you can focus on new things and reap the benefits of your efforts. Questions? Never hesitate to ask your instructor. Pilates is our favorite topic, and we love to share it with you.

5.  No mat is needed.  We provide all the equipment you need.  Bring your grip socks, some water, and a smile!

6.  How do I get there? We have ample parking in front and behind our 1261 Laurel Lane location. Our suite is easy to access, with handicapped parking, a ramp, and big doorways. If you have any access questions, please reach out to us.

7. What if I have questions? We're here to help! If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to email us at info@pilatescollectiveslo.com or call us at (805) 996-0677. We'd love to hear from you and promptly assist you.
